How the Meditations came to be
Jill Englund
After getting clean and sober I delved into every form of meditation I could find—not with any grand altruistic purpose, but simply to maintain
my own sanity and stay on the path of recovery.
In 1998, while deeply immersed in my studies for a degree in metaphysics,
I began volunteering at a drug and alcohol treatment center.
As part of what they called a “Chapel Session,” I guided participants through visualization meditations focused on the 1st step of
the 12-step program originated by Alcoholics Anonymous
After each session, participants would approach me with comments and questions like, “Do you have a recording of this?” or “I’ve never experienced a meditative state like that before. If this were recorded, I’d meditate every day.”
At the time I assumed that surely someone else must have already created recordings of similar visualizations—
especially since the 11th step encourages us to practice meditation as a foundational part of a recovery program.
Consequently, I left each session without giving much thought to
recording the meditations I had developed for each step.
Now, years later, I realize it’s time.
Time to record these visualizations and share them with those who might find them helpful on their own journeys.
Thank you to all of the people in recovery that attended my sessions and shared with me their thoughts, feelings, and reactions to my visual
interpretations of The 12 Steps.
It has given me a greater vision and shaped the meditations in countless ways.
My hope is that these meditations will support you on your journey of recovery, that you will find this an easy and accessible way to
deepen your recovery and meditation practice
"Meditation is something that can always be further developed..
It's object is always the same; to improve our conscious contact...Meditation is in reality intensely practical"
